Biography
Muhammad Sultan Khan later known as Sultan Rahi came from pre-partitioned roots. His family migrated to Pakistan following Partition to Rawalpindi. He began his acting journey in 1956 as a guest actor in Baghi, the first Pakistani film screened in China. Steadily, he rose through supporting and fight roles before shining as a hero in Punjabi cinema.
Sultan Rahi had became a formidable star by the 1970s. He earned two Nigar Awards for Babul (1971) and Basheera (1972), and became a household name with Wehshi Jatt (1975). His portrayal of Maula Jatt in the cult classic Maula Jatt (1979) made him everyone’s favorite. Over forty years of his career, he acted in 703 Punjabi and 100 Urdu films, totaling some 800 movies. He was one of the greatest actors of Pakistan, with Guinness World Records to his name. Sultan met with a terrible ending while being shot by one of the robbers during a robbery, while he and his friend were changing the tyre on GT road Gujranwala. Sultan Rahi is now remembered as the “Clint Eastwood of Pakistan”, a cinematic giant viewed by future generation.
