Biography

Latif Kapadia was a famous Pakistani stage and television actor, renowned for his presence and versatility on screen or stage. He started his artistic career in Karachi’s active theatre community. As a young performer, he was supported by legendary figures in the society, soon letting audiences know he existed with his stellar performances in plays like Sheeshay Kay Aadmi, Qissa Jagtay Sotay Ka, Ek Din Ka Sultan, and Phir Bhi Hum Jeetay Rahay! Next, he began performing regularly with the Avant-Garde Arts Theatre (AAT.) His roles there assured audiences he was a player in the field and that anyone doing any theatre in Karachi knew of him or his performances. When it became obvious that television was the new major medium in Pakistan, Latif transitioned from theatre to TV. He recreated one of his celebrated stage roles on television and built a memorably presence on important dramas such as Baarish, Barzakh, Fifty Fifty, Gurez, Nadan Nadia, Shikastay Arzoo, and Dhoop Kinare. Instead of falling into obscurity, Latif also worked in films and was notably acknowledged for his performance in Very Good Dunya, Very Bad Log. What people may not know is that Latif also recognized his talents as a musician, singing recordings of one of his friends who was a playback singer of some renown during their time. His exceptional contributions to theatre and television also earned him one of the highest honors for artistic success in the country. Students and community members will long remember him with affection, and his legacy in the arts and the community will continue through a foundation established by friends and family. The Latif Kapadia Memorial Welfare Trust aims to improve healthcare access for disadvantaged communities in Karachi through free clinics and outreach programs.
