The nation mourns the loss of Dr Arfa Sayeda Zehra, a distinguished scholar, human-rights activist and educator who passed away on Monday in Lahore at the age of 83.

Dr Zehra studied with distinction — earning a BA (Hons) from Lahore College for Women University, a MA in Urdu from Government College University Lahore and a PhD in History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
The late Dr arfa served as principal of several major institutions and held important roles such as chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women.
Her work centred on literature, Urdu language promotion and women’s rights.
Leaders and academics across Pakistan expressed deep sorrow. President Asif Ali Zardari called her death “an irreparable loss” for academic and literary circles. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid tribute, recognising her service in education and research.
