Intekhab Episode 10 Review: Why Mohni Refused Ayaan and How One Decision Turned a Wedding Into Chaos
In the 10th episode of Intekhab, viewers experienced one of the most shocking turns in the drama yet. A wedding that was supposed to bring joy turned into a whirlwind of emotions, a place of public humiliation and a long list of heartbreaking sacrifices.
The simple answer is… no one expected this.Just as everything was set for the nikkah, Mohni surprised everyone by clearly refusing to marry Ayaan. Not once, nor twice, but over and over stood firm in front of all those assembled and said she would not marry him.The main question will be: Why did Mohni wait until the last moment?
What made this episode so intense, was the mystery of why Mohni waited to make her decision until the very last second.
Why Did Mohni Refuse to Marry Ayaan?
Based on Mohni's actions and words throughout the episode, it did not seem she was spontaneous with her decision to reject Ayaan as a potential husband.
By the way she spoke later in the episode, it became clear that Mohni had decided well in advance of the day of the wedding. She likely had other romantic interests and therefore didn't see Ayaan as the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
While I completely agree that every girl has the right to say no and that consent is essential when deciding whether or not to marry someone, Mohni's actions raise a lot of interesting questions.
If Mohni was absolutely sure about her decision at the very beginning of this event, then why did she wait until after the nikkah had taken place to voice her disapproval of the marriage? The timing of her refusal had a significant impact on all involved.
Had Mohni spoken up at an earlier point in time, then both families would not have been publicly humiliated. Rather, Mohni's decision to speak up when she did, was at the instant when all emotional, social pressure and expectation had peaked among everyone involved. Her one decision caused an emotional "tsunami."
Family Honor Took Over Logic
The response of Babar showed what the bigger issue was regarding this incident; he didn’t care about what Mohni felt (emotionally); he just cared about saving his family’s honour. It was almost as if the fear of “what are people going to say?” was controlling most of the decisions made during this time. Instead of thinking about how they really felt about the situation, everyone was trying desperately to avoid embarrassment in front of society.
This is quite common in family-centric dramas (i.e. the reputation of the family often outweighs how the actual participants feel). Babar could not tolerate the thought of the wedding daura (wedding processional) leaving without a bride for Ayaan (his son); this would result in his being embarrassed throughout his life.
Thus, in a moment of panic, he made a shocking decision: if Mohni will not marry Ayaan, then Muskaan will marry Ayaan. Just like that...a life-changing decision made in a moment a heightened emotional response!
Muskaan Became the Silent Sacrifice
This is where muskaan suffered the most.
Muskaan suffered a lot because no one ever took a moment to find out what muskaan wanted.
Muskaan already had her own engagement and plans for her future. However, she was now thrust into an emotional crisis that she played no part in creating.
The emotional pressure came next.
Her father put all of his dignity and survival on her.
How do you say no after this?
Muskaan’s silent pain could be seen in her eyes.
Muskaan didn’t seem happy with the decision.
She seemed burdened and pressured by her surroundings.
This is how muskaan stood out in this episode. While everyone else was acting emotionally, Muskaan absorbed all of the pain quietly.
Mohni’s Attitude Made Things Worse
Towards the end of Mohni’s episode, her lack of remorse was puzzling.
Instead of being remorseful for what happened, she appeared oddly collected; this was surprising.
Mohni treated Ayaan like his heartbreak was just some temporary situation, and she couldn't care less.
Her lack of compassion was why most people felt a sense of empathy for her dwindled.
To refuse marriage is one thing, but to give another person nothing in terms of compassion later on is something else altogether; it creates different views about who Mohni really is.
Even when other people express their gratitude for Muskaan's sacrifice, Mohni did not seem moved and believed that she made the best possible decision for herself; this arrogance will ultimately protect her for the time being but will lead to more problems down the road.
What About Ayaan?
Ayaan warrants discussion as the most disadvantaged to marry Mohni in that he had come prepared to marry Mohni, but within less than 24 hours of arriving, he was married to someone else, which is a major emotional shock. He made his feelings known by not saying a word after the wedding. In fact, he didn't have any loud outbursts or make any emotional scene; he was simply silent. However, at times, silence can be louder than words and you could see Ayaan had a lot of anger, confusion, and emotional fatigue. Did Ayaan feel rejected? Did he feel like a victim of betrayal? Did he feel trapped? Probably, he felt all those things and that adds an exciting dynamic to what their future relationship with Muskaan will be like.
The Bigger Message of Episode 10
Not only was this episode about the wedding being called off, but it stressed something much deeper than that. How many disasters start from a place of silence?
If an honest conversation had happened sooner, a lot of the drama and heartbreak that unfolded could have been avoided.
If Mohni had spoken out sooner…
If the family had listened…
If feelings had mattered more than the image they portray as a family in society…
Everything would have turned out differently.
However, the fear and pressure of the situation is what ultimately led to all of their decisions. This is what made Episode 10 so impactful and poignant; it was both dramatic and painfully real.
Conclusion
Episode 10 of Intekhab had a very strong emotional story, including a lot of tension between family members, plus many unexpected turns. The show also touched upon major themes such as consent, pressure, sacrifice, and the impact that protecting one’s reputation will have on someone.
Mohni brought up a major issue in regards to personal choice, however her delivery was poor enough that she was hard to defend from a viewer’s standpoint. Muskaan provided the emotional backbone of the episode, whereas Ayaan became a victim of events beyond his control.
The episode successfully mixes emotional impact with excitement, leaving many viewers with unanswered questions as to how things may progress in the future.
Score: 9 / 10
An emotional episode demonstrating how quickly one major decision can change the future for more than one person.
