Aik Mohabbat Aur Episode 05 Review: Naz and Haroon’s Clash Exposes Society’s Double Standards

Beyond the solely emotional, dramatic, and family conflict scenes in Episode 5 of Aik Mohabbat Aur, this episode explored several societal themes (social pressure, failed marriages, gender inequality, media manipulation, and so on) in a surprising amount of depth and complexity.

In that vein, while this episode had several storylines that were built around and interwoven by judgment, judgment of others, there was one commonality connecting all the stories:Everyone was judging someone for something.

For example, a wife was judged for her appearance; a divorced woman was judged for trying to speak out; and a daughter whose marriage had failed was judged for that; and women, in general, simply existing in public space continued to be judged by others.Because of this, the cumulative effect of all the stories and themes found in Episode 5 was powerful.

Maham’s Marriage Continues to Break

The storyline of Maham has a lot of weight emotionally. Her marriage has so many cracks that they have become too big to ignore. The way her husband treats her, is a painful representation of the pain many women endure in toxic marriages. He hides his constant criticism towards her, as if it were merely honest comments.

The way he reacted to her dress was everything. He put her down, rather than support her decision on what to wear. By doing this, he made it clear that the problem was not with her dress but with his desire to have control.

Maham's self-esteem diminishes a little bit with comments such as these.

This is why emotional abuse is so harmful.

It does not necessarily seem dramatic.

Sometimes it appears as sarcasm.

Sometimes it seems like "advice."

Sometimes it appears disguised as "I am only being honest."But the damage done by these comments is very real.

When Maham says nothing during these moments, it pains me to know the degree to which she has taken her husband's words to heart.

Khushi’s Pain Shows How Family Decisions Leave Long-Term Scars

A different layer of emotion was added to the story as we heard Khushi's family discussing things. Her mother's excuse for why they rushed into marriage was to blame the situation and protect the family’s name. They sounded very real, as this is how parents can justify making a bad decision while trying to be a good parent.

Khushi's pain shows the consequences of hasty marriage decisions, especially without knowing the character of the person you're marrying.

One line made a big impact on me. The family admitted they rushed their decision because, after already being engaged, they feared what others would say.

Again, the opinion of society is more important than how happy a person will be long-term. This theme continues to run throughout the entire drama.

Naz vs Haroon Was the Highlight of Episode 5

Discussing the most influential aspect of this episode.Naz vs. Haroon The whole episode shifted when Naz and Haroon confronted each other.Initially, Naz thought Haroon was another media "personality" travelling around with anger/disagreement to get notice and high rating from media. Based on what we knew about Haroon, this impression was reasonable. Then, along came Haroon to change the perception of all involved.

However, when they started discussing broadcast of controversial TV program, it became clear what lay behind Haroon's view. Haroon, instead of defending chaos/challenging those who would accuse him as such, was challenging duality by speaking through clarity/telling the truth we never knew existed. This is what makes the way forward different than what we had previously perceived as possible.

What Was the Real Conflict Between Naz and Haroon?

More than simply being an argument between two people, it is an illustration of two greater opposing perspectives.Naz aspired to provide inspiration through her initiatives, especially for women who had come from middle-class backgrounds, small towns, and challenging life situations, to be able to resurrect their lives regardless of past failures or divorce.

Her goal was empowerment through performance. While Haroon challenged and provided an alternative perspective of a woman empowerment through the prism of society's true feelings about strong women.

Although society applauds strong women in fantasy and theory, when they are visible, vocal, or successful, they are subjected to criticism, judgement, and character assassination by society. It is at this point where the episode becomes controversial.

Haroon effectively questioned whether society truly supports the success of women or merely supports success until women do something to break into or challenge social norms? This question was a difficult question that everyone involved was left with after the episode had concluded.

Media, Ratings, and Ethics

The last episode looked at another relevant topic, that being ethics in the media industry.

The company/programme wanted one thing only:

money.

ratings.

viewership.

viralness.

This felt authentic.

Many companies say they care about truth, empowerment and/or awareness but little do they know that once there is controversy, their priorities change. The debate about whether or not to show the video was a perfect example of how this works. Is something worth showing because it is truthful?Or, because it has high engagement? This was what made watching the Newsroom so interesting.

Haroon Is More Complex Than He Appears

This episode provided a more complex portrayal of Haroon’s character than previous episodes had done.Up until this episode, Haroon has been portrayed in a negative light; he has been shown to be an arrogant, aggressive, and difficult character.

However, there is another side to Haroon that was shown in Episode 5. Haroon is shown to be intelligent, observant, and far more aware of hypocrisy within society than most people recognized.

Haroon’s final conversation with Naz was especially impactful. He made a very important point; that people should not make judgements about others based upon assumptions that are made purely on the basis of their gender.

A man who does bad things is not bad because he is a man. A woman who does good things is not necessarily right simply because she is a woman.

People should be judged based upon their behaviour and actions. This perspective changed how Naz saw Haroon. It also changed how the audience viewed Haroon.
